Openings to other movies!

In lesson we also looked at some other openings to films to see if we could understand the genre and idea of them. We looked at both ‘Mr & Mrs Smith’ and ‘usual subject’ and made notes on them.

‘Mr & Mrs Smith'(2005)

starts by being inside a counseling session, the couple are chatting about their marriage and how it is, not being very detailed and descriptive. in no way does this beginning inform you that the film will be an action, adventure comedy about the two lovers, but leans the audience toward thinking it might be a romantic-comedy.

‘usual suspect'(1995)

This starts by showing some matches being lit, it lights a path of fire, the camera tracks it and we see a dead body, the fire is then stopped by another man, the whole piece is very dark and spooky. It seems to be set on a big, industrial boat, we hear a dark conversation between two men on this boat and shortly after some gun shots. We get the idea that gruesome things have happened on this boat previous to this scene, it straight away sets the genre to be an action thriller, it also gives us a good outline of what the film will include.
